I think they may be Meripilus sumstenii, the Black Staining Polypore, rather than Hen of the Woods, Grifola frondosa, because of the time of year. That's pretty easy to test and also is edible.  Everyone is responsible for verifying the edibility of mushrooms they consume, of course.  I am forwarding this from our administrative email for leadership purposes (nrvmush...@gmail.com) to the Google Group for all of our membership, which goes to everyone, NR...@googlegroups.com!

Happy Fourth, Friends!

PS:  soon you will be receiving a survey about what you want to get out of your club, stay tuned!

Just want to put this on your radar as we hope to open registration next week and it will only be open for four short weeks!  Don't miss out!

Since there has been some confusion lately about our communication platforms, I would like to reiterate some things:
  • I am sending you this email from our administrative gmail account which other board members have access to, nrvmush...@gmail.com
  • If you are getting this as an email, that means you have joined our Google Group.  You can also visit it at https://groups.google.com/g/NRVMC?pli=1 if you feel you have missed anything.  If you email NR...@googlegroups.com the entire Google Group gets that email and that's how we originally intended for members to interact, sharing photos and discussing identification.
  • There's a survey out there and you should have gotten an email about it. We have about 600 addresses between the Google Group and the MeetUp Group (there are between 400-500 people on each platform and we think about 600 of them are individuals).  We are trying to pull the 200 or so individuals who want to continue their membership in this club I founded in 2008.  Many things have changed since our inception and we are looking to resolve our communication challenges and recruit volunteers so that New River Valley Mushroom Club can continue in the future!
  • We have also required members to join our MeetUp Group so that we could manage RSVPs for events since everywhere we go is limited in capacity.  I know there are other groups that have a large pool of leadership and places to meet that aren't capacity limited. Some of you have expressed frustration with that platform and there is a place in the survey where you can register those complaints.  But for now, we have to take things one step at a time.  All you have to do is create a login and join the group for the New River Valley Mushroom Club. https://www.meetup.com/
  • There is an event on August 24th that our president Jeff is leading and he will be managing the attendees through MeetUp.
  • The Virginia Joint Foray, a collaboration of CAMS, BRMS and NRVMC, which is being managed by BRMS will have a separate registration since it will be open to all four of the sister clubs (WVMC, CAMS, BRMS, and NRVMC).  We will do our very best to send the link to everyone on the Google Group, the MeetUp Group and the Facebook Group.  Some people have expressed frustration that we have a Facebook Group...it is absolutely optional!
Thank you for your understanding,
Rebecca (Becky) Rader
