Yesterday I went back to the spot where we went on the foray on the parkway and found more black morels at the exact spot we found some on Sunday. I looked all around that area and across the street as well and no luck. But I found enough to make a small dish of Morels with garlic in cream sauce which I ate on sourdough toasts! Yay! It was incredibly delicious and these are the first morels I have ever eaten. I was not disappointed! Pictures attached. Cheers! Sharon

I found two, 4-inch grays on my property here in Blacksburg yesterday
afternoon. This is in an area where I have found them before, under dying
elms. Sounds like the season is beginning!

Found my first morels of the season, in NE Carroll County, this chilly Sunday morning.    Quarter pound this morning.  Expect some more from this spot in the coming days.

Jealous that you have dying elms to hunt--I thought the Dutch Elm Disease window-of-opportunity had passed in our area over a decade ago!  I have never had the chance to hunt dying elms, they are so rare now that I don't even mention it to people, but they are THE BEST for Morels, according to everything I've read, even better than the old overgrown apple orchards (which I don't have access to, either).  Our season should have about two more weeks, if we are lucky, and I think we are looking at Morchella esculentoides now ("grays" with many pits which mature to "big yellows")

Brian, you sure did have better luck than we did on Sunday (although we had lots of fun and I am going to send a post with pictures about it in a few minutes)--what kind of habitat is this?  We may have discussed it in previous years, but I think the group loves to learn about these things, so it would hurt to discuss again...and have you found more throughout the week as you expected?  I don't think we are having a really good season for Black Morels, but the Morchella esculentoides reports are encouraging...

He replied "It's at the site of a 25 to 30 year old logging/sawmill operation, where there is plenty of composted sawdust and the ground has lots of moisture, due to being in a 'ravine' where a spring head starts. "
That sounds like an incredibly good location!
