Estimadxs colegas,

Thank you to all who participated in yesterday’s Encuentro NAU: A Symposium, a Teach-in, and a Celebration of Latinidad! From the full day of fantastic panels to the pachanga/party at night, that was truly a thought-provoking, educational, and inspiring event!

We’ve got a few more upcoming Latin American Studies events this semester:

•On Monday April 17 at 4pm in the Science and Health Building room 106, we’ll screen the recently released documentary film, From Here. (Science and Health is the funky building [#26] that is in front of Liberal Arts). Set in Berlin and New York, From Here tells the story of four young immigrant artist-activists during an era of rising nationalism. The film’s director, Christina Antonakos-Wallace will be with us to discuss the film and we’ll “zoom in” one of the film’s protagonists, Sonny Singh! You can watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTP3A7oAy14&ab_channel=WithWingsandRoots

This film is sponsored by Latin American Studies, the Martin-Springer Institute, and the Global Brigades student club. It is free and open to the public.

•On Monday April 24 at 5:30pm in LA 136, Dr. Erik Nielsen (Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Policy and NAU’s Chief Sustainability Officer) will present “Making the Hidden Visible: An Interdisciplinary Assessment of the Environmental, Social and Developmental Impacts of The War on Drugs in Central America.” Erik will talk about the 12-year trajectory of the interdisciplinary team he co-led with Dr. Kendrea McSweeney that focused on “understanding the socio-environmental dynamics of the war on drugs in Central America.” He will synthesize key findings and talk about policy alternatives for the US. I have attached a brief article he and his colleagues published in Science, “Drug Policy as Conservation Policy: Narco Deforestation,” that provides a concise overview of the phenomenon.

•On Saturday May 6 at 7:30pm in Ardrey Auditorium, Matices Latin Ensemble will join in the Spring Festival of Choirs. The concert will conclude with the performance of Chilean composer Freddy Vilches’s composition, “Abya Yala Choral Suite.” This Pan-Latin American suite combines traditional Mayan and Aztec flutes and percussion with Latin American guitars, flutes, percussion, piano, and bass. This five-movement suite sets poetry by Indigenous poets throughout Latin America who have experienced being othered in their communities or country. For more information about Maestro Vilches and his multilingual composition, see: https://events.nau.edu/event/abya-yala--the-land-in-its-fullness/. Matices’s residency and performance is sponsored by the Kitt School of Music in collaboration with Latin American Studies.

I look forward to seeing  you at these events. Please share widely to students, faculty, staff, and community members!

¡Y qué les vaya bien en esta última etapa del semestre!

Saludos cordiales,

Bob Neustadt, Director of Latin American Studies

Estimadxs colegas,

Thank you to all who came to the screening of From Here! It’s a thought-provoking, educational, and in many ways uplifting film. Judging from the questions and comments during the q & a, it seemed that people really enjoyed talking with the director, Christina Antonakos-Wallace, and protagonist, Sonny Singh!

Don’t forget our last two events of the year!
