Estimadxs,

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm LAS is presenting the film, We’ll be singing by September (En septiembre canta el gallo) in Comm 119. The film traces the evolution of Chilean New Song music from its inception in the 1960s through the coup of Sep 11, 1973. Note: The screening is in Comm 119 (the School of Communications theater), not our typical LA screening rooms. Nano Stern will be present for the Q & A via Zoom.

And on Friday Oct 13 at 7:30pm Nano Stern will play a live (and free!) concert—“Nano Stern sings Victor Jara”--in Kitt Recital Hall!!! (I’ve arranged a lot of programs in my time at NAU and I’m pretty sure this will be one of the coolest).

Hailed by folk legend Joan Baez as “the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation,” Nano Stern’s artistry knows no bounds. With a masterful command of multiple instruments and languages, he brings a fresh and relevant perspective to his music. His closest companions on stage remain, simply, his guitar and staggering vocals.

As a political and outspoken activist, Nano Stern has crafted a unique musical language that blends the youthful exuberance of folk music with the depth of classical and jazz training, all infused with the powerful spirit of traditional Chilean revolutionary songs. There is a rare power and beauty to a Nano Stern performance. Don’t miss this chance to experience the magic of Nano Stern live on stage in an evening that transcends borders, languages, and cultures.

A virtuoso musician on multiple instruments, Stern’s music both honors the history of Chilean New Song while charting a creative path towards a future with social justice. Here are a couple of examples of Nano singing:

This concert is dedicated to the legacy of Victor Jara.

As the world commemorates 50 years since the coup d’état in Chile, Nano Stern revisits the songs of legendary folk singer Víctor Jara, who personifies the spirit of the day through his timeless music and poetry.

With austere virtuosity, Stern gives new breath to this immortal repertoire.

Throughout the performance, Jara’s songs are intertwined with Nano Stern’s own compositions, allowing for a dialogue between 2 generations of Chilean song.

Please spread the word widely and urgently among students, faculty, and community members! Please suggest that your students arrive early to ensure that they can get a seat for this free concert.

These events are sponsored by Latin American Studies, Global Languages and Cultures, Kitt School of Music, and STAC (Student Activities Council).

Nos vemos ahí,

Bob Neustadt
