Hi
I have been searching the net for some NLP resources for some time now
and finally i am ready to take a plunge into this discipline .

I have a few questions which i would be really appreciative if someone
could answer

1) I have some experience programing in C++ and Java ,
need to be comfortable in some other language before i can
programme in NLP
or do these two languages suppoert enough features .

2) I have found some modules ( open source ) for developing NLP
applications ,
When usually people build commersial applications , how do they use
these .
I mean how do they integrate these in their code . As my main interest
is in developing NLP applications which will work in the web , is it
possibel to integrate these into the work i am doing .

3) Any other suggestions taht any experienced worker in this field has
for a newbie will be highly appreciated
including some book suggestions keeping in mind i am new to NLP .

P.S - My interest are not research based at the present time and more
imnvolved in developiong commercioal applications .

Thanks

Hi Drush,

Here are my very simple recommendations that I followed myself and with success:

Language - Python (my original background is same as yours. Lots of Java and decent C/C++)
Toolkit - NLTK - http://www.nltk.org/

Edmon

1) You should probably be fine using Java, unless you're intent on learning another language for NLP purposes. There are plenty of java libraries available.

2) The java libraries should be easy enough to include in a web deployed application, if you know how to build a java web app I doubt you'll have any trouble using things such as openlp.

3) There are a number of good texts on the subject. I know you don't know python, but the nltk book is supposed to be a pretty good starting point and it's free at:  https://sites.google.com/site/naturallanguagetoolkit/book
