LIAAD INESC TEC is looking for a a highly motivated Master interested in pursuing a PhD in Natural Language Processing. Some knowledge of Portuguese is highly appreciated. Grant should start in November.
The position covers monthly grant and PhD fees. The selected candidate may also be involved in other applied NLP projects.
The research line is Narrative Extraction from Texts with application to Journalistic and Medical text (mostly).

Project: Text2Story: extracting journalistic narratives from text and representing them in a narrative modeling language (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-031857)
Scientific Advisor: Alípio Jorge
Duration Grant: initially 6 months (probatory period) renewable until the end of the PhD (max 4 years).
Location: INESC TEC, Porto, Portugal
Work Area: Machine Learning / Natural Language Processing
Project overview: We are looking for a highly motivated Master to join the team of researchers of the Text2Story project and to do a PhD that will extend beyond the end of the project. The topic is Extraction of Narratives from text. The selected candidate will work with INESC TEC's Machine Learning and NLP / NLP team and will have the opportunity to work in a dedicated and young environment, in close interaction with researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students working on varied Machine Learning topics, information extraction and computer science. The candidate must be motivated to collaborate on other projects on time.
Objectives: Develop Machine Learning and NLP algorithms and tools to identify, formally represent and reuse narrative structures from textual sources, with a focus on journalistic texts and medical texts in Portuguese and other languages. The focus is on NLP algorithms and tools for extracting and understanding content.
Academic Qualifications: MSc in Computer Science, Data Sciente or equivalent preferably focusing on NLP.
Minimum Profile required: Motivation to work with NLP algorithms & tools; determination to get a PhD degree; Theoretical background and experience on NLP and Machine Learning, particularly on Narrative Extraction; Good communication skills & ability to cooperate within a team; Knowledge of programming languages(Python/R). First degree score of 15/20 minimum. Candidates not fulfilling minimum requirements may still apply.
Preference factors: Being able to use Portuguese as a language of study is important. Strong publications in NLP. Knowledge of Python and development tools (e.g. GIT);
Monthly Grant: €989,70 (MSC) according to the Stipends values of the grants awarded directly by the FCT, paid by bank transfer. The grant holder may also benefit from additional incomes in the sequence of a quarterly evaluation process (Clauses 12 and 13 of INESC TEC Grants Regulation and Annex II), up to a maximum of 50% of the monthly grant.
