Someone please tell me this is all a nightmare!

I just cannot believe that with all this discussion about the frustrations of Deaf members (and us hearing interpreters who are outraged at the Board's insensitive and oppressive handling of so many issues) the Board has decided to gain our trust by slapping the hands of the DAC!

I am trying to understand the Board's thinking about following protocol. Under other circumstances, I might be in agreement. I believe that the DAC would have first gone to the new Executive Director had he been in his position at the time of these incidents, but because of their discomfort with (and distrust of) the home office staff, they took the transparent route.  Perhaps if there were more transparency from RID, we wouldn't have this mess. Perhaps if there were Deaf people and IDPs on the Board, we could have had a meaningful dialogue instead of the Board publicly reprimanding the DAC.

The positive side to all of this is that change WILL happen. The passion that has been displayed is a result of years of passivity and frustration in trying to make this organization OURS.  I look forward to the conference and the next 50 years of integrity, accountability, transparency, and quality that we can work towards with Deaf people.

I am eager to see further discussion.

This was my comment to Sean Gerlis' vlog from yesterday, which I wrote several hours before the Board's vlog went out:
Sean, thanks for this posting. As RID drifts away from its roots and systematically silences its Deaf leaders (3 in the past year) it becomes ever more important for community action. I have been a staunch supporter of RID and a believer of working within the system for the past 17 years. Unfortunately, I do not believe change can come from within any longer. Too many of us have seen the damage that is done when native voices go unheeded.

For a good time, check out the facial affect around 1:47 -- airing dirty laundry smells bad! -- as opposed to the "perfectly reasonable" (again, check out the calm, cool, collected affect) step of going to Shane.

A couple of points:

1) The DAC vlog seems more like whistle-blowing than a formal complaint. The Board can feel blindsided all it wants, but that doesn't mean that DAC can't do what it did.

2) Yes, there are all kinds of rules protecting the rights of employees... only the DAC aren't RID employees. We don't work for the RID. RID works for us.The Board may be constrained about what they can talk about by the Bylaws. the P&P, etc.... but the membership isn't.

Are they?

-Dan.

I seem to be missing something?
The attached link is a musing on Deaf disempowerment.  What did DAC do? Say?  Can someone post a link to that and RIDs response for those if us who some how are outside the loop?

Thank you,
~jody

The video in question is a vlog that was posted that I cannot find anymore. Perhaps it was removed.

Does anyone have a link that works??  If so, please post it so people will know what we are talking about,

Thanks.

I agree with Betty on this.  Just when one thinks it can't get worse.  It actually does.  Lavonne"s vlog is simply a defensive response and a public reprimand. For the life of me, I can't figure out what the board is thinking, reasoning, or discussing.  If ever we needed a year of Jubilee, it's now.

Hi,

I believe people want to know what prompted LaVona's vlog  (the "complaint")

Know where to find it?

Below are links for two vlogs submitted to RID board by DAC on May 10th (along with letters in English) :

1). DAC recommendations to RID  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t__u_7XfAqw

LaVonna's responses included some issues from vlog #1 above while addressing vlog #2 as "naughty naughty".  It is confusing as her recent vlog addressed some recommendations submitted to RID in vlog #1 while the actual title of her vlog is related to vlog #2. "response to complaint".  DAC submitted two SEPARATE vlogs/letters  1). recommendations  2). complaint.

Hi folks

The vlog of the DAC letter, signed by Jeremy Quiroga is here:
http://youtu.be/b5xh6BPzbfU

The response from the RID Board is here: http://youtu.be/9UAK0dhTToY

For future reference, most of these discussions and vlog postings end
up in the Deaf Caucus Facebook page, if you're a subscriber.

Hope this was helpful,

Thanks Nathan,

This vlog (Jeremy Quiroga) is the one that is not listed on many responses. It is the pivotal point that started the whole RID response and DAC/Deaf Caucus responses that followed.

I hope folks posting will go to the link you provided here. It's not easy to find.

Perhaps someone would be so kind as to provide a chronological link list. That might eliminate much of the confusion. Perhaps there is a blog somewhere?

Hi there Ty!

Links are provided earlier in this listserve, but for timeline purposes, the "reprimand" occurred April 4, Naomi and I withdrew our nominations on April 12, board resignation vlogs were posted April 24; Carol Lee Aquiline and Jeremy Quiroga's vlogs posted May 10; LaVona's posted May 24 and Branton's May 25.

Hope this helps-
Lewis

I'm trying to find all the vlogs.
I can't locate them all in 1 place. I have been searching individual FB pages and looking for links. I know Bradley Dale also had a response - but don't know where that fit in the chronology.

Here is my first stab - if there are others missing or if any of these are off topic - please resend a cleaned-up list. I think that would help me:)

Thanks,
Stephanie

Thanks, Lewis, for the chronological link. That will be helpful for all. I have followed all; however I am not sure about April 4th? What was the April 4th "reprimand"? To whom from who?

Thanks. Eileen
