Colleagues
I encourage those interested in recommending and advocating for
improved science education in NH to consider joining:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/NHScienceEducation/
This forum was formed based on the recent adoption of HB542 which
allows parents to require school lessons to be altered to match their
objectives, for at least their children. Parents seeking stronger
science education can use this, as no doubt those objecting to various
aspects of school programs will use it (think religious, political,
cultural, and other factors that might lead a parent to seek having
their children exposed to certain topics, etc.) ...
I doubt that the proponents of this legislation intended for it to be
used to strengthen science education, but it makes perfect sense for
parents to seek this objective. However, for this to be easy, they
need access to resources, curriculum, lesson plans, and other tools
that can be used as a solid basis for such education. The initial
focus for this site is to go directly at education on evolution, which
is an area significantly watered down, if covered at all, as a result
of controversy raised in states like Texas that can dominate text book
selection and contents.
Feel free to add folders focusing on additional areas where we need to
strengthen STEM education in NH. If you wish to advocate for
creationism or other approaches, please target other online
communities to make recommendations there. The objective of this
community is to avoid the controversy and focus on how students can
get the best education on topics like evolution that arise from
strictly technical and scientific foundations.
Best wishes
Jim
