LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has signed a new law aimed at presidential write-in and petition candidates.

The governor signed the measure Tuesday at the request of the Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale. Gale says the law will make ballot certification easier, by changing the filing deadline from Sept. 1 to Aug. 1.

In exchange, the new law will eliminate a restriction that banned presidential primary voters from signing a candidate's ballot petition.

The Secretary of State's office says it received 28 notarized affidavits for presidential write-in candidates in 2012, and only 2 of those tried to secure enough petitions to appear on the ballot. Neither met the threshold before Sept. 1.

The measure was sponsored by Sen. John Murante, of Gretna.

The bill is LB349
