Today's meeting of the Disability Caucus
Present:

  • Kathy Hoell (by phone), CD 2, LD 5 (redistricted to CD 1, LD 3)
Meeting Agenda & Notes
  • Meeting opened at 10:15
  • Participants introduced themselves and their reason for their interest
  • Issues discussed:
    • Debt ceiling bill/activity
      • Little is known about the repercussions
      • There is no protection for Social Security and Medicare
      • Medicaid cuts are likely and will focus on optional services, such as home and community based services
    • Voter suppression bills
      • Government Issued Photo IDs
        • Many people with disabilities have no birth certificate
        • The cost of obtaining an birth certificate can be prohibitive for some people with disabilities who are impoverished
      • Reduced time period for early voting
    • Caucus 2012
      • For the first time there are slots for people with disabilities to be delegates to the national convention
      • We have a responsibility to make sure that caucus is accessible and that accommodations are adequate
