Hi everyone, hope this holiday season finds you well!

We are hosting Maciej Talaga who will be teaching two workshops at Athena. Details and registration links below. Please pass along to others who might be interested!

Maciej has been doing HEMA since 2007 and cross-trained in sport epee in 2013-2016. He studied German longsword and dagger fighting systems under the guidance of Bart Walczak and since 2008 he is one of the instructors at ARMA Poland Study Group in Warsaw. He is also a former President of ARMA Poland and a member of the FEDER (Polish Federation for Historical European Martial Arts).

Between 2009 and 2017 he competed intensively at national and international events, most notably reaching quarter-finals in longsword at Swordfish (2011) and winning medals on major tournaments in Poland and Italy (both 2016). Since 2014, he gradually moved his focus to coaching professionally, helping some of Polish top competitors prepare for important events.
Apart from fencing he is a soon-to-be PhD in Archaeology and Cultural Studies focusing on the Middle Ages, manuscript 3227a (aka "Pol Hausbuch") and embodied historical research.

Workshop 1: Thursday 1/19, 7PM-10PM
A workshop based on Hs3227a, open to all levels. Includes a lecture and then a practical session exploring one of the key technical terms defining the swordsmanship from this fight book: Wenden. In particular, we will work out a slightly unorthodox way to deliver Czornhaw which makes it fully compatible with the source and very efficient in actual application.

Workshop 2: Tuesday 1/24, 7PM-10PM
Thrusting clinic for sparring-ready fencers, especially those with some competitions under their belt. We will focus on streamlining the technical and tactical aspects of thrusting with the longsword. If time allows, we will also explore some didactic aspects, i.e. how to (self)teach to thrust efficiently.
