The 20th Annual Raymond J. Lord Symposium on Historical European Martial Arts at the Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies at UMass Amherst will be held on April 26, 2025. 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

This day-long Symposium will feature presentations of interpretive work on re-creating the historical martial arts and research conducted to better understand the contexts in which they existed.

Speakers this year are Ann Tlusty (Bucknell University) 'Who Were the Swordmasters?: Swordfighting Professionals in the Holy Roman Empire during the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries' and 'Tournament Swordfighting as Early Modern Sport', Eric Burkart (University of Trier) 'The Emergence of German Fight Books in the Fifteenth Century: Patronage, Guild Culture and a Question of Bare Survival ', and Ariella Elema 'Mapping Trial by Combat'.

Pre-registration is required as there is limited space (and filling up fast). Please email to register. There is no charge and lunch will be provided.

This year's Symposium is sponsored in part by the HEMA Alliance and Phoenix Swords.
