Hi everyone,
With the kind support of Athena School of Arms's offer of the use of their facility, I am working towards a 1 or 1-and-a-half-day event in the late summer that would be focused on unarmed HEMA. I think this first iteration will include pugilism, abrazare, and ringen (I'm not outing anyone of the potential instructors yet other than myself). If it's a success, I'd look to add other fun topics in the future.
I want to know from you all what would be the preference: 1 day or 1.5 days?
As a one-day event, I would envision starting
the day with a warm up and a review of break-falling and other matters for safe
practice (how and when to tap, proper modulation of intensity, etc.) for an hour; each of the specific disciplines to go for an hour-and-a-half or
two-hours; and for the end of the day to be rounded out with an "open-mat" of coached sparring with a particular focus on the IGX ringen rules.
As a one-and-a-half-day
event that begins Saturday afternoon and then continues all-day Sunday, I would
suggest the first half-day be dedicated to safe-practice as above with a bit more time dedicated to it and sessions fundamentals associated with each of the disciplines. Sunday would be turned over to sessions focusing on more advanced applications in each discipline and again ending in coached sparring sessions as above.
As an example of what I mean by the distinction between Day 1 fundamentals versus Day 2 more advanced application it could be Day 1 generic wrestling things like grips, grip-breaks, arm-drags, etc. with Day 2 seeing discipline specific play offered by the instructor (s). This is a conceptual examples.
So, I'd love to here indicative feedback on a) do you like the idea of the event at all and b) which format interests to people. This feedback will not be construed as a commitment to take part in anyway.
Thanks in advance,
Jason L. Cook
