Yes imagine that. Actually, the author (John T. Ackerman article link) moves in that direction, within the framework of his profession, so to speak.
One of my favorite lines in the article is where he characterizes the traditional DOD approach to environmental concerns as "...shallow and unremarkable".

Imagine that, our collective security having something to do with
climate and things like floods, famine, food production, disease,
drought, dislocation, poverty, unrest, upheaval, etc. and so on.
Good thing we have nuclear powered aircraft carriers and such, huh.
