Book Reports

A couple of 2008 books that are not too technical, about climate change.

"Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America" by Thomas L. Friedman.

In a sense, this is his "World is Flat" best seller, but with the game of the century (climate change, fresh water scarcity, and eventual decline of oil reserves) added in. Covers a fair amount of ground.

"Ice, Mud and Blood: Lessons from Climates Past" by Chris Turney.

The current climate problem as been a boon (i.e., more research funding:) for paleoclimatology, the study of climate past. Turney has written an easy to read examination of highlights of that past, and the relevant points for our time.

Have not read this one yet, but have it on order. Looks fun.

"The Long Thaw: How Humans Are Changing the Next 100,000 Years of Earth's Climate", by David Archer (2009)
A short (196 pages) glimpse at the post 2100 scenarios, something that is seldom written about outside of science journals.

"Oldies" but goodies

"Global warming: Understanding the Forecast", by David Archer (2006)
A comprehensive introduction to the subject.

Lastly, another posting on this interesting book.

On-line complete text:

"The Discovery of Global Warming", by Spencer Weart (updated in 2008).

http://www.aip.org/history/climate/

A very detailed look at the history of the science, and its road to acceptance.
