Subject: updates to NSF GFRP sollicitation
COE Department Heads and Directors of Graduate Programs:
Please share this with your faculty and students,
On September 26, 2025, the National Science Foundation released the NSF 25-547: NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Program Solicitation. There are significant changes to this program that affect student eligibility and the time frame for submission is relatively short:
· Applicants should carefully and thoroughly review the Detailed Eligibility Requirements in Section IV of the program solicitation for full information.
· Eligible: Undergraduates, bachelor’s degree holders, those in joint bachelor’s-master’s programs, and first year Ph.D. students
· Second-year Ph.D. students are no longer eligible. The specific requirement is that applicants must have “completed less than one academic year in a graduate degree program (according to the institution’s academic calendar; non-degree coursework must be clearly identified in the transcript and does not count toward this limit)”.
· Individuals enrolled in joint bachelor's-master's degree programs and in graduate degree programs can apply only once.
· The application deadlines depend on discipline, ranging from November 10, 2025 through November 14, 2025. For example, Computer and Information Science and Engineering and Materials Research applications are due November 12, 2025 and Engineering applications are due November 13, 2025.
· In all cases, reference letters are due Friday, November 7
· “NSF will continue to emphasize high priority research areas in alignment with Administration priorities as stated in A Letter to Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy – The White House and detailed in the FY 2026 NSF Budget Request to Congress.”
