Overlapping discrete city boundaries.

performance and research project on 12 Asian Cities
concept, choreography, dance and video: Alessandro Carboni
music and sound installation : Dickson Dee
pictures, doc-filming: Laing Guo Jiag

Producer: Noise Asia – Hong Kong

Overlapping discrete city boundaries is a multidisciplianary
performance
research project. It propose a research considering in particular
the
aspects of urban transformation of 12 Asian city for 2 times:

first trip(22nd Feb -29th March 2010):
Foshan - China
Shenzhen - China;
Kuala Lampur - Malaysia;
Singapore - Singapore
Ho Chin Minh City- Vietnam;
Hanoi - Vietnam.

second trip(december 2010)
Bangkok - Thailand;
Macau - China;
Seoul - Korea;
Tokyo - Japan;
Taichung -China Taiwan
Taipei - China Taiwan

The project will focus of the high-density of population areas
and how these are transformed in relation to city planning and urban
distortion (in more dramatic cases). It is per se the pursuance of
something microscopic. Something almost molecular. The project
attempt to analyze the minimal quality of urban textures – the
vibrations, striations, temperatures, smells and tastes – a spatial
framework in which it is possible to explore new insights in
understanding not only how urban transformation takes place , but
also
how spatial consciousness has the function in advancing the pursuit
of
social understanding in the realm of city planning equally important
is to
inform the public with these advanced ideas / practices and make
them
visible. We have to understand that space - like its inhabitants -
is
never simply a matter of give and take. They are socially generated,
differentiated, experienced and contested on constantly shifting
social,
political, economic, and geographical terrain, which means that the
body- if it is to be concretely achieved, experienced, and reproduced
-
must be engaged in spatial as well as social terms.
In order to analyze in a wider and deeper context, it is necessary to
include in the research a different methodologies of analysis able to
investigates different layers and signs of time. From a historical
point of
view, urban transformation possesses a truly unique and complex
past.
By transforming those cities into an active, open-air platforms and
learning environment, the project attempt to reflect and provide
alternatives for urban spaces using performance, video installation
and
sound. In doing so, the project essentialists the political
discourse
which tends to dominate and frame our perceptions towards a city,
its
inhabitants and possible transformation(s). This, leads us to restrain
our
imaginations and our ability to put our imaginations into practice.

METHODOLOGY
Overlapping discrete city boundaries, propose a on a site specific
production and research for each city. For each city Alessandro and
Dickson will spend more then five day. During that time they will
collect video, sound, gestures and traces of specific urban areas in
the city. Video installation, dance performance and live video
performance in realtime, will be composed for each city and presented
in a unique event.

OUTCOMES
_Video installation:
Disposed in to a variable dimension room, the installation generally,
consist in a multi video projection of images and video aroud the
concept of urban transformation. Each city is explored by Alessandro
Carboni (video) and Dickson Dee (sound) using a specific modality of
shooting, originally created by themselves, called “multishooting”.
This particular technic consists on the possibility to shoot at the
same time different point of view of the same subject or to enlarge
and make wide the angle of shooting. Using four or videocamera at same
time and a gps tracking system, they are able to generate a
multilayered video in which the result became a dense image similar to
a cubist representation of reality. The installation is composed by 2
or more video projection.

_Video and sound live performance:
The performance consist in a live interaction between sound and video.
For each city Alessandro and Dickson collect video, sound around the
city particular focus on the particular aspects of urban
transformation. These material will be re-modulate in a live video
performance in realtime.

_Dance performance:
The dance performance is a solo on a black wooden platform(4x8meters).
Basically, on the platform, 3000 small white buttons (1cm each),
placed in a perpendicular at a distance of 5 cm apart. The grid forms
a square.
The white buttons positioned squarely on the black platform represent
the grid of cities and the body flow movement of urban transformation,
which changed the morphology of the cities. beside this square, there
are a square formed by a perimeter of nails on the platform at a
distance of one centimeter apart. For every nail, is tied a thin
thread of white cotton. Each of them connected to an opposite nail.
Inside the square I created a web of wires that are interwoven to form
a chaotic pattern of dense lines. From the view of choreography I
chose to work on the composition - in real time with the dancer. At
first, the dancer moved around the perimeter of the square. Tents
messy wires one by one, creating a grid which is orthogonally perfect.
Every nail that held the wire was marked by a small number and a
letter written on the black platform. The intersection
wire hanging in the space, resulting in a coordinated specifications
of the abscissa and ordinate of the square. The body and the sound
interact together, generating multilayered patterns on the grid.

_Documentation:
The project will be concluded with a publication of a book, dvd and
cd. They will summarize all research, urban exploration and
performance
documentation of all entire project.

we will staying each city 5 days, 1 or 2 more days when there is
option program happen.

day 1, arrival and check the venue,site visit(preparing for video
shooting), rest.
day 2, start to shoot video and sound recording for the city
day 3, edit the video, sound edit & make sound track for video
installation
day 4, preparing the live performing for dance, music and installation
works.
day 5, performing
day 6, leave the city to next.
