Leaves and brush can block drainage channels or pipes and cause flooding to occur on roadways or on yours and your neighbors’ property.

What YOU Can Do to Prevent Blocked Drainage on Your Street:

Please be a good neighbor and follow these simple guidelines:

·        Please DO NOT blow or dump leaves, brush, grass clippings, or trash into the drainage ditches or streams;

·        Please place leaves in paper bags and set out with brush for collection shortly before your neighborhood’s designated collection time.  For brush collection times in your neighborhood, see www.nashville.gov/recycle and click on the link under “Brush and Yard Waste”; and

·        You can learn about composting leaves for use in your garden at www.nashville.gov/recycle, by clicking on “Backyard Composting”.

Dumping Debris also Damages Water Quality:

Did you know the drainage system in your neighborhood eventually drains to a stream that ultimately feeds the Cumberland River?  Besides clogging up the drainage ditch or pipe, yard debris and other waste can harm water quality in our streams.  When large amounts of grass and/or leaves are dumped or washed into streams, this organic material begins decomposing, which can literally suffocate fish and other aquatic organisms by depleting all the water of much needed oxygen.

Thank you for doing your part to prevent blocked drainage systems and damaging flooding and pollution that can result.  For more information, or to report a clogged drainage ditch, please call either 615-862-4600 or visit our website at  www.nashville.gov/stormwater/

Consider adopting a storm water drain.  Lear more about the adoption at https://www.nashvilleh2o.org/adopt
