Anyone want to ski at Timberline this Saturday, January 28?  The forecast says there might be 2 - 4 inches of snow on Friday.  Then, on Saturday, only an occasional snow shower.  Many of our club members will be on the Canada trip, so the slopes will not be crowded!!!  :-)  I'll be near the slopeside exit of the day lodge around 9 am (near the ski check and the rental shop).  We'll wait for the Mt. Hood Express bus to arrive at 9 am, since some of our members might be on it.

And how about some orange ribbons on our ski poles so people can more easily identify other club members?  Something like this:

Instead of Saturday, let's ski this Sunday, Jan. 29.  The forecast is for some more snow on Saturday, followed by a bluebird day on Sunday.  Bring your sunscreen!

Hey Emilio,

I plan on heading up to Timberline to ski with everyone Sunday.  THis will be my first time out since getting over Covid, so I'm not sure how long of a day of skiing I'll have in me.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for letting us know you are coming.  So far, I've heard from 3 people total, so there might be only about 4 of us there, which is not bad considering that 46 of our members are now on the Canada trip.

I think all 4 of us are still trying to get our ski legs back, so we we all probably want to quit early.  I did ski at 7 ski areas in northern Canada around Christmas time, but then I led a sedentary life for the past month, so I might not last very long either.

Anyway, it will be fun.  I might be the only one with the orange ribbons on my ski poles this time, but I will be easy to recognize.  I have a light blue jacket topped by a neon-green (yellowish green) safety harness, which makes me really visible, even in a crowd. I'll be outside the day lodge around 9 am, waiting for the Mt. Hood Express bus to arrive, in case any of our people will be on it.

The most important thing is to make it to the mountain early, if you are driving a car.  Timberline's parking lots almost always fill up, and then Timberline employees close down Timberline Road and won't let anyone up until someone leaves.  The only question is how early will the parking lots fill up.  On busy weekends, especially on a nice sunny day, the lots might fill up by about 7:30 or 7:45 am.  I have heard of someone arriving at Timberline at 8 am and still being able to find parking, but that is an exception.  I would urge you to plan to arrive at Timberline by 7:30 am.  Then spend about an hour snoozing in your car.  By 8:30 you can start putting your ski boots on and getting ready to ski.

By the way, parking won't always be this bad.  It gets better in the Spring (March, April, and May).

If you arrive a bit late and they close the access road to Timberline, you have several options:

1. Stay in line in your car and hope that the line is not very long. People do leave Timberline early for various reasons.  Some people might be just dropping someone off up there. The line of stopped cars does move, though slowly.  Hopefully, you'll be able to make it up to Timberline by 9 am.

2.  Turn around and drive back to Government Camp.  From there, you have 2 options:
     a) Take a free Timberline shuttle bus up.  These buses run approximately every 20 - 30 minutes.  They start right in front of the day lodge of the Summit Pass ski area.  Just park in that rest area if you can.  This shuttle is very popular, so there will probably be a line of people waiting for these shuttle buses. As the day goes on, the parked cars overflow onto the main road through Government Camp, so you might need to park a little lower down that road and then walk back up to the Summit Pass ski area to take the shuttle up.  Or ...

    b) Take the Mt. Hood Express bus up.  It costs $2 one way.  This bus stops at about 3 places within Government Camp.  First at the Best Western Hotel, then in front of the Collins Lake Resort (across the street from the Post office, and finally across the street from the gas station near the Summit Pass ski area.  If you take that option, d NOT wait for that bas at the Summit Pass ski area.  Too many people do that, so the bus might fill up and you might not be able to get on.  Instead, catch the bus at the Collins Lake resort (across the street from the Post Office).  There is a small bus-stop shelter there, made of a metal frame and glass walls.  That way, you'll know that this is where the bus stops.  It comes around 8:35 or 8:40 am,  so be there ready to catch it.  The next bus comes along about an hour later.   And then there is a big gap of several hours before the next bus.

3.  If all this sounds like too much trouble, or if all the buses are full, your last option is to give up on Timberline and ski at Skibowl instead.

If you are late for whatever reason, phone me at: 503-510-1477, and we can make arrangements to meet up a little later in the day.

Emilio
