Hi folks! Nobody (except Michele) has replied yet to the question about when and where to ski this weekend. My question was directed mainly at those with a Fusion Pass, meaning a choice between Timberline and Skibowl, and a choice between Friday and Saturday.
So, I'll just make a decision for myself. I will ski at Timberline on Saturday, Jan. 15. Anybody wants to join me? I'll be at Timberline day lodge's rear exit, near the free ski check and the ski rental, around 9 am. After skiing some groomers for a while, I might want to check out some ungroomed terrain between Timberline and Government Camp, such as maybe Sand canyon and the Glade trail or an unnamed area east of the Alpine trail that ends up at the Summit Pass ski area. It depends on how easy or hard the snow is. If the snow is too wet or grabby, I'll stay on the groomed trails.
Last weekend, several of us were looking for each other all over Timberline and couldn't connect. Two-way radios would have made it so much easier to find each other, but it seems that nobody had brought their radio. If you have a 2-way radio, bring it, and tune it to channel 6-19. That's channel 6, code 19.
Remember that the parking lots fill up early. At Timberline, you need to be there by about 7:30 or 7:45 am at the latest in order to get a parking spot. Then snooze in your car for a while, or read a book, until the lifts open at 9.
Also, remember that Timberline now runs free shuttles between Timberline and the Summit ski area. But note that the now groomed Alpine Trail is currently not worth the effort unless it gets widened. It is too straight and too narrow. By too straight, I mean it goes straight down the fall line even at its steepest place, instead of meandering and zig zagging through the few trees on that steep meadow. You just have to be braking all the time on the narrow trail, making very short and quick turns, while at the same time avoiding the long line of Nordic skiers climbing up the Alpine Trail. When the snow is good, it is less work and more enjoyable to ski the ungroomed terrain around the Alpine trail.
New members looking to find us and ski with us? Some of us have orange/red ribbons tied to their ski poles, so look for that.
