Google v. Apple: Shakeout in Tablet Town

NEW YORK, (TheStreet) -- Apple's(AAPL) iPad 2 may help sort out the winners and losers in the tablet game but one pattern looks clear: just like in smartphones it will be Apple vs. Google(GOOG).

Apple unveiled and upgraded the iPad 2 Wednesday with two cameras and a dual core processor, all without raising the price of its category giant. Not only does this give would-be competitors a whole new set of features to beat, it forces them to try and do it for under $500.

This has the budding tablet market set up "for a pending shakeout," RBC analyst Mike Abramsky writes in a research note that looks at the prospects for 18 tablet makers.

Device makers like Motorola(MMI)Nokia(NOK)SamsungResearch In Motion(RIMM)HP(HPQ) and HTC, will have to duke it out by aiming for areas the iPad may be weak, Abramsky writes.
