Elastic bands - options?

Of all the things I enjoy about my Moleskines - the paper quality,
the various sizes, the cover, the durability, the design and feel of a
filled-in notebook in your hand, the thing I particularly like is the
elastic band. I like the function and simplicity of it's design.
Although it's been heavily copied (more & more it seems), I always
thought it was the most distinctive feature of the Moleskine brand.

But I'm loyalty challenged. I use and have tried many types of
sketchbooks. Some I really like. But the thing I always miss is my
elastic band. I've tried to improvise - rubber bands (meh, not very
aesthetically pleasing). I even tried stretching out a couple of those
Livestrong-like big rubber bracelets (they all broke).

So, I'm wondering if any of you creative types have come across or use
other types of bands for your other notebooks?

I've got a simple solution. I went to my local craft store and bought
1/4 inch flat black elastic. You can get this at most dept stores too.
I wrapped it around the notebook I wanted it to fit, holding one end
with my finger and stretching it around the notebook unti the ends
met. I held onto the spot where they met and let go of the other end.
from the point where they met I added an inch and a half. I overlapped
the two ends by 3/4 of an inch and stuck them together with some
glue, let it set until the glue was dry. I then used a zigzag stitch
on my sewing machine and stitched over the overlap, backstitching two
or 3 times.

I covered up my ugly stitching by stitching a couple of small pieces
of leather over the stitches.

I tried another one with the same stitching as above but this time
making a tube from the leather, turning it inside out and then sliding
it overthe elastic BEFORE I stitched it up. That one looks a little
better.

My initial use for it was to make an elastic for my wallet to hold
cash- bifold wallet that used to have a bill clip on it, i ripped that
off because it kept ripping my jeans. This elastic works a lot better.

I like to be able to hold my pen and index cards on the front of my
Moleskine. I use a hair band that I bought at Sainsbury's (a food
store here in the UK). They're nice to use because they're flat and
are bonded together rather than using a metal clip like most hair
bands. I can't remember the brand name, but will post it here later.

This is what it looks like:

I knew there was some industrious soul out there who would've tried to
make their own.

Sounds relatively painless though I have zilch experience on a sewing
machine. I like the look. Very rustic.

Thanks.

I use a rubber band for the small moleskine to do that same thing. :)
