I hope this message finds everyone well. Please forward the following request from Hillary's office with your contacts and the rest of MPC members:
I hope this message finds you well. I am relaying a request from Supervisor Ronin's office so we can hopefully identify 3 to 5 TAY or parents with direct experience with questionable police contact to attend the hearing scheduled to address the issues that came up during the Balboa HS gun incident.
Basically they'd like to get people to speak at the hearing on SFUSD-SFPD accountability scheduled for 11/28 @ 4p at City Hall.
Public testimony should focus on how interactions with SFPD sometimes lead to false confessions or violations of minority youth rights due to intimidation, coercion, or lack of understanding of their Miranda rights. Coleman is going to try to recruit parents and youth also. And of course speakers to address the lack of school district adherence to policy are also important.
If enough people can speak to the issue Supervisor Ronin intends to follow up with proposing legislation that ALL youth under 18 have Immediate access to an Attorney Prior to any interrogation with SFPD. If the legislation move forward the police would be required to call a 24 hour line to access Public Defenders for consultation for all Juvenile arrests or interrogations (there is a law that says this is currently required for all arrests with minors 15 and under).
Please share this with anyone who you think is willing to speak and has a compelling story to share.
Let me know if you have questions.
