Dear Community,
Our office has been working very hard with non-profit immigration attorneys to prepare a budget supplemental through the Board of Supervisors that will ensure that all immigrant youth fleeing violence in Central America that are living in San Francisco and on the so-called “rocket docket”, will have free legal representation available to them. Studies show that 9 in 10 kids that do not have legal representation are deported. The refugee crisis compounded by the expedited removal proceedings in Immigration Court have crippled our non-profit legal service providers. Yesterday, Supervisor Campos introduced a $1.2 million budget supplemental, each year for two years, at the Board of Supervisors that would fund up to 12 new immigration attorneys to represent the children and families on the “rocket docket.” We have worked with our Budget & Legislative Analyst to prepare the attached report that details the complete need for additional legal services to protect the due process rights of these children.
On Wednesday, September 10th, our budget supplemental is before the Board’s Budget & Finance Committee. Prior to the hearing we will be holding a press conference on the steps of City Hall. Getting this supplemental passed is an uphill battle and we need the entire community’s support at this press conference/hearing. Please see the attached flyer.
By passing this supplemental, San Francisco can not only protect its residents that have fled violence in Central America, but we can also serve as an example to other Cities and Counties around the nation who can act to similarly stand up for the due process rights of children.
