About the Foundation…
The Mary Ryan Foundation (MRF) is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to provide relief and assistance to impoverished
communities within Tanzania and to provide support to orphans and
children of single parents within those communities. The MRF was
formed in December 2008 out of a need identified by Michelle Santoro,
who is currently working as a Peace Corps volunteer in the village of
Ilembo, Tanzania. Michelle's friends and family were inspired by her
work in Ilembo, and decided to do what they can to support the village
from the U.S. The Mary Ryan Foundation is named after Michelle's
grandmother, "Mommom," because of the love she had for all children.
The MRF: identifies and provides financial support for tuition and
educational materials to students in Tanzania; provides direct funding
to schools to improve the quality of education in Tanzania; and works
continuously with Michelle to identify and address needs of various
Tanzanian communities. We are able to see the immediate impact of our
financial support through Michelle's eyes, but our goal is to
establish the MRF as a lasting presence in Tanzania beyond Michelle's
service in the Peace Corps.
