Social Media Manipulation in the Era of AI

OpenAI announced that it disrupted a covert Iranian influence campaign that was using its software, ChatGPT, to spread disinformation online. This came less than two months after the U.S. Justice Department took down a large network of AI-created bots that were spreading Russian propaganda. China, too, is exploring AI-enhanced social media manipulation.

Mitigating this threat won't be easy, but according to new RAND research, there are some actions that could help. For example, social media platforms could redouble their efforts to identify, attribute, and remove fake accounts. Media companies and other legitimate content creators could develop digital watermarks or other ways to show that their pictures and videos are authentic. Read more »

Exploring Solutions to the U.S. Housing Crisis

The Cooper Housing Institute, which advocates for solutions to the nation's housing crisis, has given RAND a $400,000 grant to study the Section 8 housing voucher program and look for ways to improve it. The institute hopes to make the program more efficient and effective, a first step toward expanding it to more families in need. Read more »

Competing with China: What Americans Need to Know

The U.S.-China relationship presents a complex array of foreign policy challenges. Improving Service Members' Transitions from the Military

The RAND Epstein Family Veterans Policy Research Institute brought together leaders from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and higher education to discuss the current ecosystem of programs supporting military-to-civilian transitions.
