Ted passed away Thursday morning. Gary, if you're checking in here,
my sincere condolences. He was an inspiration and an example for so
many of us.
In the winter of '89-'90, I was fortunate enough to have a temporary
assignment in New York City. I was a frequent visitor at the NYRRC
headquarters on East 89th Street. There I found a copy of the
original print run of Ted's biography, which at that point had already
been out for quite a while.
At that time I was "collecting bridges" to explore the city. I'd go
up the east side to the Triborough, find the stairs, run over to
Queens, go south through Long Island City (I think it was), and back
on the Queensborough.
One time I was determined to "bag" the George Washington Bridge. On
that incredibly long trek to the upper West side and back, I thought
about Ted's runs around the entire island, sometimes twice in a day,
that I'd read about. At that time I was running sub-three marathons,
and I thought I was pretty serious stuff. Learning about Ted made
quite an impression. He was a real inspiration for me.
