It was believed by the Romans that less hair on men looked better and
was cleaner. In the Roman Baths one room was dedicated to hair removal.
Tweezers were used to pull underarm and chest hair.

It seems as though it might have been painful, but definitely worth it.

I learned this from the television show Nova.
