To all

I am in the process of setting up Medical Necessity checks inside of the meditech system.  We are faced with the challenge of inputting our LMRP/LCD codes and are wondering how other hospitals go about this whether it is a manual entry or a 3rd party software.  IF you are using a third party software what is it and how does it interface with Meditech.

Hi, Drew,

We purchase the codes from 3M (who purchased InfoX) and upload them into Meditech.  We get a new set of codes monthly.  They email a link to an FTP site and I download the change (add/delete) reports and the (zipped, password-protected) update files; our charge master coordinator reviews the changes and then lets me know its okay to upload them into Meditech.   If there’s another vendor who supplies these codes, I’m not aware of them.

Drew,
We use a monthly download file from 3M which is downloaded into our Billing Requirements dictionary.  This has worked well for us.  Contact info:

Hi Drew.

We are in the process of looking for a Medical Necessity vendor ourselves.  We have decided NOT to go with Meditech, because of the manual entry (or third-party import).  Either way (manual or import), with Meditech (and Iatric Systems if you're looking), you only get basic, relational checking between CPT and Diagnosis codes.  There's no information provided to the user in regard to why the check failed or more importantly, what options the Physician has in selecting other CPT or Diagnosis codes to get a Pass.

But since you are asking about Meditech, Meditech's web site (http://www.meditech.com/medicalnecessity/cspages/HCciFEMedicalNecessityTOC.htm) references a vendor called INFO-X.  If you Google that vendor, you'll end up on the 3M website (http://www.info-x-inc.com/templates/products2.asp?DocID=334&page=).  3M purchased INFO-X in 2004 (not sure why Meditech is still referring to them by the previous name after 2 years!!).  Anyway, Medical Necessity Dictionaries is the product for the LMRP upload file.  Medical Necessity Online is 3M's own Medical Necessity checking software (which is actually the one we're taking a look at now).  Anyway, INFO-X (or 3M) is the only one that Meditech referenced, so my guess is, that's probably the only option.  Here's the name of our contact at 3M if you're wanting to know more about the Medical Necessity Dictionaries product.  Karen has been a great resource in getting whatever information we need, in setting up demos, in getting pricing, etc.

Unfortunately, as we are in the beginning phases of this project, I can't offer you much more than what we've found so far.  Hope this much helps at least.

Thanks.
Jeannie
