TITLE: Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator
CODE: 219 STATUS: Non- Exempt

Qualifications:
Education:
Associates in Applied Science or Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology from accredited College or University and 5 years
Of pertinent Laboratory experience.
Associates or Bachelor degree in one of the Chemical, Physical or Biological sciences and 5 years of pertinent Laboratory Experience.
License/Certifications: Current New York State Education Department Office of Professions Licensure Registration Certificate as a Medical Technician or Medical Technologists preferred. ASCP Certification or equivalent preferred.
Experience: The position (s) of Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator requires a broad of based knowledge Laboratory computer practices through formal training with the Meditech Laboratory Systems. Progressive training on all Laboratory modules is required. Three years of experience with the Meditech Laboratory system desired.
Responsible to: Managed Information Systems Director. Indirect report to the Laboratory Administrative Director.
Responsible for: The Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator will oversee and direct all laboratory computer modules and services in a cost effective, patient orientated manner. All hospital related interfaces and upgrades as they pertain to successful Laboratory services.
Summary: The Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator requires a
broad based knowledge of Laboratory Science as it applies to information systems application in a Meditech Information System environment,
through formal training in the Clinical Laboratory setting.
Five years clinical Laboratory experience and at least 3 years of Meditech experience
DUTIES
1. Ensures all staff are oriented and trained on the Meditech System. Oversees or completes such activities to meet regulatory initial, 3 to six month and yearly competencies.
2. Serve as the PRIMARY consultant and resource for laboratory staff and Supervisors as it relates to the Meditech Laboratory modules.
3. Investigates and responds to end user questions , and assists with the resolution of issues arising from the laboratory modules on a daily basis.
4. Maintains an in-depth knowledge of functions, features, database structures and data entry requirements for the laboratory module. Actively coordinates and participates in training sessions for end users related to these modules.
5. Represents the laboratory on information systems matters with other departments and interfaces(Reference Laboratory) to include;
Ø Meditech Systems Upgrades
Ø Interface projects with other Departments
Ø Billing upgrades and test code assignment
Ø Reference Laboratory interface testing and building.
Ø Reference Laboratory interface errors and test code upgrades.
Ø NPR report writing as needed to enhance the Laboratory modules.
6. Oversees all Laboratory reporting through the network and Forward Advantage system.
7. Works closely with other Managed Information Systems personnel to determine when systems changes by other departments will affect the Laboratory Modules.
8. Assists in the development and review of laboratory policies and procedures related to administration and operations of the laboratory modules.
9. Organize and conduct periodic interdepartmental meetings among departments directly impacted by the laboratory modules. Provide a forum for presenting new issues and resolving old issues related to laboratory information systems.
10. Assists in the testing, implementation and maintenance of all software updates, instrumentation interface upgrades and replacements; new release for the laboratory information systems software and instrumentation related upgrades
11. Works with other Meditech Information Systems personnel to resolve laboratory interface and testing ordering issues.
12. Oversees quality assurance activities as they relate to the Laboratory Information systems functions and other module functions as they affect laboratory outcomes.
13. Attends the Laboratory monthly Quality Assurance meeting and reports on identified quality indicator(s).
14. Meets regularly with the Laboratory Administrative Director to discuss all issues, projects and ongoing project updates.
15. Apprises the Director of Managed Information Systems of all events/requests affecting the laboratory modules.
16. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes
in work schedule, system requirements and general workload requirements.
17. Performs other duties when requested including, but not
limited to assisting all laboratory staff.
Communicates effectively:
1. Participates in monthly departmental meeting ensuring that all staff is well informed, regardless of shift or status.
2. Ensures that communication channels are understood and utilized by staff.
3. Participate with Director in regulatory compliance and licensure with all operational regulatory bodies.
4. Responds to the needs of the Medical staff, system wide and acute care management, and staff ensuring timely problem resolution and follow-up.
5. Engages in effective relationship management:
Ø Consults with all appropriate parties before initiating change.
Ø Understands customer needs well and communicates effectively with key customers.
Leadership: 1. Uses knowledge and understanding of the Laboratory industry,
competitors, customers, system and organizational business to
think strategically. Uses operational strategy to pursue
opportunities for growth and links the goals of his/her area of
responsibility to those of the organization.
2. Uses key operating indicators, monthly financials and other control
systems for planning and decision making. New sources of revenue should be explored and implemented where applicable.
3. This Coordinator is results-oriented, seeks positive outcomes in a
self-directed manner, and accepts full accountability for financial,
quality and customer service goals within the scope of responsibility.
4. This Coordinator serves as a role model to motivate and empower
others; encourages teamwork; gives effective feedback and mentors employees for advancement of Meditech system knowledge.
5. This Coordinator supports and promotes organizational decisions,
influences others to embrace change from a "big picture" perspective.
6. This Coordinator encourages independent thinking in subordinates. The Coordinator provides guidelines for effective Information Systems operations in his or her absence.

Adheres to standard safety practices : Laboratory, Department and Columbia Memorial Hospital policies and procedures related to safety.
1. Participates in training and development activities in accordance with Columbia Memorial Hospital policies and practices.
2. Wears protective equipment at all times when working inside the Laboratory.
3. Displays good guest relations and positive attitude toward all Hospital visitors, patients and vendors etc.
4. Interact with co-workers in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative work environment.
Requirements: Physical Restrictions/Limitations
Ø Must be able to demonstrate fine motor coordination for manipulation of
Equipment, instruments and supplies.
Ø Must demonstrate ability to sit or stand for periods of 60-100 % of the time.
Ø Must demonstrate ability to move around different parts of the facility.
Ø Must demonstrate ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
Ø Must be able to bend to get files.
Ø Stretching to reach phones, files, supplies-full arm extension.
