Meditech is recommending to our site that the patients be TRANSFERRED (in
ADM) to OR in order to select the patient to get drugs out of a McKesson
Accudose. That would mean we would have to have beds in the OR for patients
to be put into when transferring. In other facilities, where I worked with
Pyxis, we never did this. We just had the OR be able to select any patient
except for CLI, REF. We had this set on our dispensing machine interface
side. This site is CS 5.6 and is a McKesson shop with robot as well as
accudose. Is there some reason they would really need to do this??? I
cannot imagine how anyone would be able to keep up with this. Plus, OR
usually removes the drugs in advance and wants the patients at PRE status as
well....I can't imagine how you would do this with in patients. We could
never keep up with actually doing a ADM transfer for this. They say the
site should do this for the cath lab as well. 3 Meditech specialist told
them this. I am just having a hard time believing it and never did it at 3
other sites using Pyxis. What is your experience with using dispensing
machines in the OR? Thanks in advance!!

Debbie:
Our patients are transferred from Day Surgery to PACU to an inpatient surgical unit. They are never transferred to an OR location.

In our Omnicell, medications are not removed from the OR cabinet, against the patients' profiles, but against the anaesthetist or nurse who is administering the medications. The medications actually administered, are documented on paper or in Picis, respectively.

Our MT Temp Loc field fires off a transfer message to McKesson.
Transporters use the Temp Loc field to locate them to OR, CathLab, etc,
and remove the Temp Loc when they return to the unit. If anesthesia or
someone needs to get something sooner than that, they can use McKesson's
transfer button and do it themselves, or manually admit them at the
cabinet. We have PRE INs show at all our OR cabinets.

We use Pyxis, but all patients show up on the OR Pyxis. I don't think that
Meditech knows what they are talking about.
