We have been experiencing some dropped MEDITECH connections on our
devices that access MEDITECH via wireless. This doesn't happen all the
time but once every three days is too much for any department end user.
I.S. hasn't been able to experience the dropped connections when we do
the walk through but we know it happens from the patient locks that are
reported to the Helpdesk.

We completed a wireless survey 2 years ago to anticipate this potential
occurrence and deployed AP devices accordingly. We are planning to do
another wireless survey to mapped out wireless coverage and signal
strength to see if anything has changed.

Is it fare to say that a MEDITECH connection using wireless is extremely
"hypersensitive" and that anything less than a constant 54bpms will lead
to a possible frozen session or dropped connection with MEDITECH?

I think it's safe to say. We have had the same problems. Consequently,
users are reluctant to use the COWs we have purchased.

We've been very successful with wireless COWs using Meditech via Citrix. Once we got over the initial mapping problems, we've had almost no issues.

We have been successful as well using wireless WOW's using Meditech via Citrix. Prior to going live with our eMAR/BMV we did a load test on on wireless network and we identified some areas that needed to have additional access points installed. Once we did that, we have not had many calls to our helpdesk about dropped connections.

If you are also using wireless scanners, there may be a conflict with the scanner and computer network card frequencies. That was a major issue for us until we changed the wireless cards on the computers (actually thin clients running a virtual pc session) to a different frequency.

We just went through a new wireless system review as we are experiencing
the same problem. Part of the issue is that Meditech magic was not
written to handle the variances in connectivity caused by a wireless
signal... Part of our hospital was built in 1913 and quite literally has
chicken wire in the walls to hold up the plaster.

Apparently the new wireless spectrum analyzers are more refined than the
ones we have had available in the past (3 years ago). Our network group
is switching all of the COW devices over to the 5ghz range. Microwaves
and other interference does not go up to that frequency.

We are also using Citrix as it handles the sometimes wireless issues
much better than Meditech's client.

Tim, once the wireless signal drops (and they ALL do, no matter what the survey says) the telnet session is lost.
The only way to really get around this is to use Citrix or terminal services. We use Citrix here and publish Remote Workstation to the desktop. So, if the connection is lost, only the connection to the Citrix farm is lost and it has the ability to reconnect and the Meditech session is still running (since it's on the server instead of local).
