We are a 5.5 C/S site using bedside medication verification with
medication carts (1 or 2 per unit) that have a full PC, wireless barcode
scanners, med drawers, etc. BMV has been in use about 2 years and
overall works well for us. I have a question regarding support policy.
Occasionally a cart fails so our PC technicians repair the cart and in
some cases have to replace the bad cart with a spare. This requires
over-riding the med drawer access code on bad cart, pulling med drawers
from bad cart and putting them in the spare replacement cart, then
resetting access code on spare cart (to what is used on that unit).

How have those of you who are also are using medcarts handled the
actually moving of medication drawers to a new cart if necessary ? Do
you have a parmacy tech or pharmacist, nurse, the PC tech... perhaps 2
or 3 of them together, doing the medication drawer swap ? What is your
policy for supporting medcarts when they fail - especially if one fails
on 2nd/3rd shift or on weekends? Any comments sincerely appreciated.
