This past year, our Administration asked us to take the electronic
signaturing of Verbal Orders LIVE at our CS 5.55 PP 12 site. We did so,
and have had numerous problems - most of which have been resolved.
However, the biggest issue we have is the number of verbal orders that
have to be signed electronically now when on paper it amounted to
signing just one order. For instance, H & H daily for 3 days is one
order on paper, but generates 3 orders in the electronic world (each of
which has to be marked for signature by the doc.) A Pharmacy range
order Morphone 2 - 10 mg IV or IM will generate 2 - 3 separate orders
for the doc to sign electronically while only one on paper. Or the case
of a group of orders which includes Diet, Activity, several Meds, and
perhaps a procedure or 2 - on paper would require only 1 signature, but
electronically generates at least 5 separate orders for review.

Have any of you found a creative way to address this with your docs, or
has it even been expressed as a problem by them in your settings?

We are dealing with multiple complaints from our docs about this and the
layout of the orders themselves. They find them very hard to read.

Would appreciate any comments or suggestions you might have to offer.

Thanks so much.

Our facility also began queuing Verbal (and Telephone) Orders to the
physician's sign list this past November. Our physicians have had the
same issue that you are experiencing of viewing the orders where as upon
signing there is not enough information. We have asked for an
enhancement request from Meditech to address this. We are evaluating
upgrading from CS 5.54 PP11 to 5.64 PP9, does anyone know if the Sign
Documents is any different or more detailed? I have not been able to
find much information in this area so any information would be
appreciated.

Thank you!

In 5.64 the Electronic Signature process is a little different but the
Orders have no more information than they did in 5.54.

We are also experiencing the same issues with this feature. Right now
we are trying to figure out how to enter a telephone order to continue a
whole list of meds post op. Pharmacy does not want to enter all new
orders with a copy and edit but there is no good way to generate the
esign of this telephone order. Technically they are still active
orders. They say that they are ending up creating more rx numbers just
so that there is something to trigger the esign process. Another
example they gave me is when the nurse calls the physician with a lab
result and he has tells them to continue the same order. They want this
signed but normally pharmacy would not make any change to the orders.
Now they need to generate the esign process and there is nothing in
pharmacy to do this. We don't have stop dates to change and the only
thing I can currently think of is to add a label comment but that will
make the MAR messy. Any ideas?

Kathy
