We've got the approval!
September 20, 2009
Dear Downtown Merchant,
“Sidewalk Chalk Day” has been approved and we are encouraging local
merchants to
participate. When last we did this in 2006 it was a wonderful feel-
good event and a big hit.
Here is what will be happening:
On Friday, October 2nd from 1:00-3:00 p.m., local citizens will be
invited to come down and help “decorate” the downtown sidewalks in
preparation for MaynardFest. Participating businesses will buy
sidewalk chalk that will be left out for people to decorate the
sidewalk in front of that business.
The cost of the chalk is minimal compared to the potential downtown
interest the project will generate, and the cleanup for this event is
zero since rain and foot traffic will eventually take the chalk away.
There are great benefits to be had by participating in Sidewalk Chalk
Day, here are just a few:
1. Citizens feel a stronger, personal connection to local business
owners because the owners
have created a space for them to connect with.
2. People who participate are more likely to come downtown again
during the actual festivities
to show off their artwork
3. People become more attached to their fellow citizens because they
have come together
to make something happen in their community.
Town officials have been contacted, and approval has been given for
the project. The first year that we did this (2006) we had excellent
participation using only flyers in businesses’ windows. This year
notice will be posted in the Beacon and in the Action Unlimited, as
well as through local organizations. Spread the word and help get
people to attend this wonderful event.
To participate, all you have to do is hang a flyer (which will be
provided) advertising
that you are part of the event, buy a couple of buckets of sidewalk
chalk and make them available from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Monitoring your area
for anything objectionable and sweeping it away would be helpful.
Also, take a peek from time to time and make sure chalk is put back in
its container and not just left lying around.
For a minimal investment, I feel that Sidewalk Chalk Day can really
impact the community
in a positive way and I urge you to consider participating in the
event.
Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Denise Shea

P.S. I’ve spoken with CVS and they have agreed to increase their
supply of sidewalk chalk just for our event. Starting in about a week
or so, you can go in and buy your chalk.
