At the end of 1983, the Matienzo polje was designated a "Lugar de Interés Geológico" (LIG) by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME - an autonomous organisation attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation). The Matienzo Caves Project has now become a "sponsor" of LIG 59001 where we can directly report, at a national level, threats and damage to the landscape and caves.
