Babies know how counting works (e.g. that you need to count objects only ones) before they can do the task reliably. This confirms my belief that ability to do arithmetic reliably and conceptual understanding are two different things (though connected). Moreover, reliability can be increased, especially for babies and toddlers, with the use of computers. We had an exciting discussion about a baby computer game on Saturday - more later!
