Arlington Yard, yesterday and today

This afternoon (2026-07-18), volunteers joined me in Arlington to work on a new club table activity: a quiz game using photos of caterpillars, moths and butterflies. We sorted through over 100 photographs, and discussed how they would be used to show the differences between moths and butterflies, and to match caterpillars with adult forms.

When we finished, most of the caterpillars were matched with photos of a corresponding adult -- though some caterpillars were missing their adult form. One of the volunteers noted the absence of a photo of an adult Pandora Sphinx.

As volunteers were getting ready to leave, we stood on the porch and talked about lepidoptera and related topics while watching the rain come down. After a while, I looked up and noticed something dark and lumpy hanging near the porch ceiling -- an adult Pandora Sphinx (see attached photo; lifer for both Lisa and me). 

Yesterday, conditions were sunny and warm, and we saw:

1 Northern Broken Dash

2 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

3+ Cabbage White
