Committee:
On March 24th the Boston School Committee is scheduled to vote on additional budget cuts, layoffs, cuts in transportation, and school closings for the Boston Public Schools. Every year we are told that there is no money available for public education and every year the youth of Boston continue to be shortchanged by a school system that is severely under-funded & under-resourced! The proposed budget will cut the budget, force layoffs, cut transportation, reduce custodial staff, defer maintenance, and cause school closings.
Money for public education is available. The government has spent trillions to bail out the banks, Wall St. and the auto industry. Trillions more go to the Pentagon and the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, & Pakistan. The state gives away millions in tax breaks to the wealthy & corporations. Recent legislation will accelerate the privatization of public education by increasing the number of publicly funded privately owned charter schools. Equal quality public education is a right and must be fully funded!
Regardless of the outcome of the March 24th vote, we will continue the struggle for equal quality education when the City Council meets to approve the BPS budget.
