G'day all,

Looking at updating the app since there has been renewed interest by those who emailed me directly last year.

A big thank you to those who have emailed me thanking me for my work and providing examples as to what problems it solved. Relevance is important.

Flabbergasted that people still appreciate using it 10years after it was initially created. Even more chuffed that my RISK boardgame got mentioned on the PBBI blog as #1 in a top 5 list =)

The code for the "latest" decade old version of HCT however is unfortunately lost.

Nevermind. I don't recall it being difficult.
Grab Theme -> Update Table.

The updates to the app I have considered include:
- ensure support for pastel theme is included (as in 0.97b)
- support for bivariate thematic themes (one run of code rather than two)
- option to save theme into metadata of new table (to recreate thematic if needed)
- option to save previous and new style code in attribute column.

I have also considered the removal of:
- interactive option: Users should modify thematic directly before running code. This was initially included for debugging purposes .
- direct update to table: Takes too long by comparison. I am impatient by nature.

Does anyone else have any ideas they would like me to incorporate or revisit?
Alternatively, am I wasting my time? Is there a better app already out there / Does MI-Pro half cover some of these functionalities already? ie solution from Jacques @ Paris-GIS I think it was?

For those interested, please up vote or down vote the considered feature updates listed above by emailing me. Be sure to include the subject matter as what I have above so it does not get lost.

Last but not least, since I do not have a personal copy of MapInfo, is anyone willing to help test my builds?

Please excuse my ignorance as I have not really touched MI related material in the last few years so I am not familiar with all the new bells and whistles. Is MapBasic still relevant / the way to go for MI-Pro?

Other than that, I trust everyone in the MapInfo community is well. Thanks for putting up with me.

=Steve

I very much interested in an update. And a solution to the problem with overflow. I have a table with 460 unique entities, and when i use the thematic tool to give a color and the HCT, the HCT crashes with a note about overflow.

I don't use it often Steve, but when I need it, it's a godsend. There're no other apps out there at the moment as good as what you've created as far as I know - granted it's been a few years since I've looked!

Cheers,

Marty

Which is a way of saying yes, please make an update! The interactive option would be nifty. I'd be happy to help test if you need a guinea pig.

Hi Steve

Coming to BrisVegas next week if you want to catch up for a coffee?
Absolutely yes you get my vote - still using 10 year old version of HCT regularly - even in its old format!

As far as updates go:
- ensure support for pastel theme is included (as in 0.97b) - yes nice if you can do it
- support for bivariate thematic themes (one run of code rather than two) - no need; happy running twice!
- option to save theme into metadata of new table (to recreate thematic if needed) - hadn't thought of that so yes it would be nice
- option to save previous and new style code in attribute column - yes if you can do

I have also considered the removal of:
- interactive option: Users should modify thematic directly before running code. This was initially included for debugging purposes - only very occasionally use
- direct update to table: Takes too long by comparison. I am impatient by nature - No! I like original table being separate and staying the same

Happy to play guinea pig if you need the numbers.  Have tables ready to test as I did a big job recently....

Yes please Steve, not only do I still use your old HCT, but promote it to clients as well!

Was only discussing it with another LGA client yesterday!!

Hope all is well in your world, Al

I'd also love to see an update. still a really useful tool. should just be built into MapInfo as a standard feature by now though.

keep up the good work.

Actually, I would like thematic symbology to become part of the table dataset.

That is, each MapInfo Table could come with zero, one or several thematic symbology built in. The user could create a thematic, and “Save” that thematic into the table, so the thematic becomes available to other users and other workspaces.

Though, from a technical point of view, this would probably require a major overhaul of the internals of table files…

Cheers,

Nick Lawrence

Hi Nick,

Have you seen the 'Save As Default Theme View' checkbox in the Thematic dialog? this does exactly what you describe, but with the limitation of only allowing a single theme to be stored in the TAB file at a time. The thematic is stored as table metadata, so there's no overhaul of the format required.

The one niggle is that the default theme isn't automatically loaded unless you tick the 'Automatically Open Default Theme' box in Options > Preferences > Map Window > Display.

Cheers,

Andy
