Hi All,

I am currently trying to collate a land parcels layer for Central East England.

I have found the Land Registry's INSPIRE Index Polygons website and can download one shire at a time.  I am currently doing this, and converting the GML to tab using Global Mapper.

This is fairly time consuming, and the conversion from GML to tab for this size table is also putting a strain on Global Mapper 14.

Is there another site that I could get tab files, or another source of this data?

Regards
Rob.

Hi Robert,

It’s not the data, it’s your software. J

Something robust like FME will work on mass GML files with no problem. You can even fold them into a single TAB file set (while making a silent prayer to the god of 2Gb file limits).

Worth a trial of the software IMHO.

The scripting on global mapper is pretty straight forward, might be worth looking into.

Thanks guys,

I am downloading a copy now.  It’s taking a while – I am afraid the internet speed in rural England is pretty average it seems.

When I have looked at FME previously, the cost was a bit prohibitive.

This sort of translation is only sporadic for me, and Global Mapper has been a great utility.  We have mainly used it’s ability to combine and reproject grid or image layers, which FME appears to also do.

Batching in Global Mapper was available from its menu, so that was not an issue, but it ran out of memory (8 GB installed).  Was actually very quick for the first 20% of the conversion, and then slowed to a crawl.

Uffe, would I need to run FME using command line parameters to make it work with this data, as gml does not appear in the interface.

Regards

Rob.

Hi Robert,

You have to click the "..." to add GML as an input format. It was only last week, that I tried some GML from Ordnance Survey.
No commandline-stuff needed.

Hi Uffe,

Which program are you running?  I ran the MUT.mbx, and it did not have any option for … on the formats list.

So I tried to click the …. Button on the files options and was able to choose the gml file.  However, I did have to choose a format to make it active and had chosen a shape file format.

The error log told me it didn’t find any shape files in that directory (fair enough).

Suspect I am doing something lame.

Hi Robert,

The option Uffe is referring to is available in MapInfo v12.5.

If you do have this then you may want to look at the GDAL / OGR libraries

I tried running MUT.mbx that was provided in the UT directory of both 12.5 and 15, and didn’t see that option?

Is it the MUT.mbx that I am supposed to be running?

That was pretty weird.

This is the message that was in the sent items, and yet I received one that I had sent earlier?

Anyway try again (text from message in the sent items):

Hi Robert,

I use the option under tools >  universal translator to run the system. A box come up with FME Quick Translator.

Then on the translate dialog – if GML is not in the Reader > Format box then click on the three dots to the right of the format edit text you then a full list of supported formats and GML is one of them.

Hopefully that will work for you.

OK, have installed MapInfo Pro 12.5 and used the FME translator there (it doesn’t seem to be in 15?), and then tried the translation, and it failed.

Then I tried FME on the months free trial because I considered it was something quirky.  But this gave me the same error.

The logfile is below.

When I tried the web pages that are specified, they come back as being unavailable.  Could this be the issue?  Is there a way that I can stop it from needing to use them?

Hi Rob,

It might be that your proxy server is blocking access to the schemes. I suggest trying downloading this from Land Registry and pointing to it locally in the parameter settings.

Ian, you may well be right. I was able to get a different error when I set the read parameters to ignore xmlshema in dataset, but it was looking for the schema in the source directory. (See below). The trouble is to how do I get to those xsd schemas if the proxy's are blocking my access to http://192.168.4.19:8181/geoserver/schemas/wfs/2.0/wfs.xsd .
I have found a manual from safe software that seems exactly what I need, https://cdn.safe.com/training/course-materials/fmeuc/Complex-GML-manual.pdf, but still investigating where to get the xml.

You could use QGIS to open the GML and then save in MapInfo tabfile format - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/inspire-index-polygons-spatial-data

Thank you Greg,

I had forgotten QGIS.  I use it to get the openstreetmap data as well.

Opened it up, saved it as a MapInfo table in a WGS 84 projection, and then opened it up in Mapinfo, and all was good.  Total time was about 3 minutes.

Thank you all for your help and advice.
