The comet whipped past the sun yesterday and appears to have lost quite a bit of its icy mass—you would too if you passed through 5,000 degrees of temperature! Despite reports that it has disintegrated, it has not. To paraphrase Mark Twain: reports of its death are greatly exaggerated.
But… and this is the important part… it has morphed into something we have never seen before. Here is a time-lapse video of the comet approaching the sun—its icy nucleus and bright tail still intact, and emerging from around the other side a bit worse for the journey. How this thing will appear in our sky—if at all—this coming week is anyone’s guess. http://spaceweather.com/images2013/28nov13/rip_anim5.gif?PHPSESSID=l5isdj8jjnhbavs55c1ilrdf04
And it’s THIS kind of thing that makes science so exciting!
