01)   TWAN honors

Wow... a good day! Not only am I honored as the TWAN "Photographer of the Month" for May, but my recent aurora shot is today's TWAN "Photo of the Day" (May 18, 2014)!   Maybe I should buy lottery ticket just in case!   http://www.twanight.org

02)   A great Camelopardalids meteor shower…  or not.  (May 23/24)

On Thursday night & Friday morning, our planet will streak through a swarm of dusty particles left behind by a periodic comet 209P/LINEAR and perhaps put on a meteor shower that could rival—or even surpass—those of the annual Perseids shower of mid-August.  Perhaps.  But you’ll need to be in a dark sky location to have a chance to see anything… check it out in my current “Stargazers” column.  http://www.creators.com/lifestylefeatures/astronomy/stargazers/a-new-meteor-shower-this-week.html

03)   “Flying Blue Marble” dinner/lecture/stargazing  (Sunday, May 25)

Sit in rush hour traffic for awhile and it's hard to believe that anythinganywhereis moving.  But, despite its appearance, our world is whirling through space in seven different directions at more than a million miles per hour.  Here's a program that will surely leave your head spinning!

The evening begins with a light buffet dinner, followed by the presentation; then it's out to the Springs’ Astronomy Park for some telescope viewing of the magnificent desert sky (weather permitting) with expert amateur astronomers.  For more information and reservations, call the Springs at Borrego RV Resort at 760.767.0004 or visit:  http://www.springsatborrego.com/stars.php   No RV is necessary to join the fun, but programs do fill quickly, so make your reservations today!

04)   “Night Sky Photography” workshop  (May 31-June 1)

The summertime Milky Way is glorious... no question about it. But have you ever captured a great photo of it with just your camera & tripod?  Join me for this special two-day Southern California workshop and learn the secrets to amazing night sky photography from under the clear, dark skies of Borrego Springs, California's only International Dark Sky Community.  Reduced rates for the workshop and lodging are available.  Register soon at the link below!    http://www.dennismammana.com/BSNightSkyPhoto2014.htm

05)   “Summer Solstice Celebration”   (June 21)

Join us to celebrate the onset of summer, and peer into the magnificent summertime sky with amateur astronomers from around Southern California!  This terrific package at the Borrego Springs Resort includes: one night deluxe accommodations, buffet dinner, indoor slide program followed by telescope viewing of the night sky (weather permitting, of course) with expert amateur astronomers. Non-hotel packages are also available.  For more information and reservations, please call the Borrego Springs Resort toll-free 888.826.7734.  Availability is limited and these programs are very popular, so don’t delay!    http://borregospringsresort.com/pdfs/Special%20Events%20Packages.pdf

06)   Borrego Night Sky Tours

Sights that boggle the mind are visible each night in the clear dark skies over Southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert―colorful stars, stellar clusters, planets, star-forming nebulae, Earth-orbiting satellites, distant galaxies and more.  Unlike a typical “star party”, a Borrego Night Sky Tour is a personalized and truly inspiring journey across the cosmos above Borrego Springs—California's first and only International Dark Sky Community—with the power of a telescope and one of America's favorite celestial tour guides.  And I promise it’s one voyage you won't soon forget!    http://www.borregonightskytours.com

07)   Arrange for popular presentations in your area!

Many of my fans have expressed disappointment that they cannot attend some of my astronomy programs and night sky photography workshops here in Southern California... but don't despair. Groups such as photo clubs, camera stores, astronomy associations, schools, etc. often host such programs, and if you know of organizations in your area that might be interested, please email me at mam...@skyscapes.com, and perhaps we can put something together in your area!

09)   Astronomical enrichment tours

You know it’s on your bucket list, and now may be your best chance in the next decade or two to see the northern lights.  Remember, the sun is now just past its "solar maximum" phase and, with it, auroral displays are at their best. The next solar max?  Maybe in 2025. Maybe.  There's debate in the astronomical community if it'll even happen. Don't miss out; act now before space is filled!

Churchill Polar Bears, Northern Lights & Hudson Bay Train (October 2014 with Dr. Seth Shostak, SETI ):   http://melitatrips.com/destinations/2014/churchill/churchill.html

Norway Northern Lights (November 2014 with Dennis Mammana):  http://melitatrips.com/destinations/2014/norwaynov/norway.html

Alaska Aurora Borealis (March 2015) with Dennis Mammana):  http://melitatrips.com/destinations/2015/alaska/alaska2015.html

And, if you’ve never experienced the aurora borealis or a total solar eclipse, this might just be your ticket… a possible “two-fer”!  Iceland for the aurora, and the Faroe Islands for a stunning total solar eclipse! (March 2015 with Dennis Mammana)    http://melitatrips.com/destinations/2015/faroe/faroe.html
