Dear Esteemed Colleagues,
As part of its commitment to ensuring food security and elimination of hunger and malnutrition, the Ministry of Agriculture joins over 130 countries across the globe in celebrating World Food Day (WFD) on 16 October each year as part of a worldwide awareness campaign. This year, WFD 2021 provides an opportunity to draw attention to the seriousness of COVID-19, the vulnerability of our food system and what needs to be done in Malawi to build back better. Like past commemorations, it will be celebrated jointly with the African Day of Food and Nutrition Security on 28 October 2021.
This year the focus for WFD is on the four betters, which represent FAO’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Hand in Hand initiative and for Malawi, national development priorities as espoused in Malawi 2063. These reflect the interconnected economic, social and environmental dimensions of food systems:
- Better production: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns through efficient and inclusive food and agriculture supply chains
- Better nutrition: End hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition including promoting nutritious food and increasing access to a healthy diet
- Better environment: Protect restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and combat climate change
- Better life: Promote inclusive economic growth by reducing inequalities
In that regard, the Ministry of Agriculture developed a consolidated budget to solicit funds to commemorate WFD 2021 and the African Day of Food and Nutrition Security. We are kindly requesting your assistance by supporting the relevant budget lines in the attached consolidated budget.
