due 2022 NOVEMBER 15
1. About the special issue
As global health discourse around Planetary and Eco Health remind us of the inseparable relationship between individual human, social, and ecological health, scholars and practitioners in the field of human nutrition and dietetics are working to better understand, adapt and advance practice so that it remains evidence-based and relevant. Dietary patterns, and the food systems on which they depend, are key areas relevant to nutrition and dietetic professionals in this space.
A group of dietitians and nutritionists from over 30 nations codeveloped a professional vision for sustainable food systems, in 2017. It described sustainable food systems as as those which nourish all people, now and into the future, with sufficient, nutritious, affordable, tasty, diverse, culturally appropriate food, and that such food systems support physical and mental health while preserving, promoting, and respecting the integrity of ecological and social systems. This vision is necessarily multidimensional, addressing many interrelated elements of socioecological systems. However, one of the barriers nutrition and dietetics practitioners face in contributing to this vision is the complexity of the issues, which elude deductive epistemologies, and the challenge of translating rapidly emerging, interdisciplinary research.
The Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics is calling for submissions of original research, reviews, and commentaries that help scholars and professionals in the field to contribute toward sustainable food systems and dietary patterns in a way that is evidence-based. All submissions should focus on sustainability, clearly defined, sustainable food systems and/or dietary patterns in the context of nutrition and dietetic practice.
We welcome submissions on topics such as:
* Sustainable and healthy dietary guidelines, including perceived trade-offs or contradictions
* Diverse concepts of sustainable food systems and diets across cultures and geographies, and how these relate to nutrition and dietetic practice
* Clinical implications of sustainable dietary guidelines in assessment and management of malnutrition
* The relationship between sustainable food systems and diets, and the multiple burdens of malnutrition, globally.
* Nutrition and dietetic education and training in the context of sustainable food systems and dietary patterns
* Setting-specific implementation of sustainable initiatives such as in hospitals and/or institutional food services (e.g., food waste mitigation and management approaches, Indigenous foods in menus)
* Nutrition and food technology, reformulation and other food system adaptations to address sustainability in the context of nutrition and dietetic practice.
* Evidence for societal uptake of sustainable food systems and dietary patterns
