I was wondering if anyone knows the restrictions during a mid-week
swim today, say 11:00A? Will it be crowded? With a lifeguard on
duty, do you HAVE to stay within the roped area? If I did stay within
the roped area, will it likely be not condusive to getting a workout
in?

I appreciate it!

Basically, if you start outside the ropes, you can ignore the
lifeguards and ropes. You can swim inside the ropes and do laps back
and forth. But, it's not going to be exactly like an open water swim.
It won't be busy during the day.

It's still not wise to be swimming out in Wingra alone.
Within the ropes it's about 50 yards across so can do speed intervals, etc.

Attempting to ows early this afternoon at Vilas Beach (Lake Wingra).
Does anyone have any reports from the past couple of days on
conditions (cloudy, weedy, etc.) other than the Madison Beach Report
that states it's Open?

Last Friday it was fairly weedy near shore. Okay, fairly might be an
understatement. If you can handle getting through the part where the
weeds are slapping you in the face and twisting around your arms,
you're just fine.

Thought I'd report back on the swim. Actually, it wasn't too bad for
weeds since most were still a feet inches below surface. Water was
warm and a bit choppy, clarity was about 3 feet. We did an out and
back from left of the swim area, but drifted a few yards past the swim
area by the time we were 3/4 across, then turned back. Anyone
experience a current as you get 3/4 across?
