error code -36

There is a long-standing problem with the use of the "ignore apple
double files" switch. When I google for it, I find LOTS of people
asking about it, but no solutions being offered. When I enable that
option, I get this sort of error often when I try to write to a
mounted volume:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in
“lockon.png” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

However, if I disable the option, all operations are unbearably slow.
Is there never going to be a fix for this?
