MV Chess Players,
We hope you’re enjoying a great summer with plenty of fun in the sun — just don’t forget the sunscreen! If you’re looking for a break from the heat, here are a few updates from the club:
Recent Events
A big thank‑you to Alyssa, Leah, and Lucas for organizing the team battle in the park last week — fantastic turnout and great energy. And thanks again to Leah for running yesterday’s online tournament on Chess.com (we are an affiliate of Chess.com).
If anyone else wants to host an in‑person or online meetup, let me know. Casual park meetups are incredibly easy: pick a date, send a quick note, and show up. With nearly 100 members (96 registered for in‑person events), you’re almost guaranteed a solid turnout.
Upcoming Events
Our next formal meeting at the Senior Center is Tuesday, August 4, 5:30–8:00 pm.
Sign‑ups for the fall Chess for Fun session open August 3. As always, the cost is $5 for all three meetings, which covers the room, advertising, and a little support for club equipment and prizes. This fall we’ll meet on the first Monday of each month, except September, when we’ll meet on the second Monday due to Labor Day.

MV Chess Club Philosophy
Our club’s purpose is simple: have fun, make friends, and improve together. Part of that is learning to win and lose gracefully. If you’re playing opponents of similar strength, you’ll win about half your games and lose about half — and that’s perfectly normal.
If you learn to enjoy the losses and learn from them, you’ll be happy 100% of the time (assuming you enjoy winning too). Congratulate your opponent whether you win or lose, and if you win, consider sharing a tip or two if they’re interested. Let’s keep building the friendliest chess club in town.
Okay, that’s it for now. Hope to see you soon and please email with any questions.
