To One and All:
Congratulations to all the Midwest
Clubs that took part in Championship play this past weekend . . .
Although the Chicago Griffins overall record wasn't as good as the Chicago Lions
in Super League play, the Griffins went out on a high note by defeating the
Lions 41 to 19. The Lions tied for 3rd place with a record of 3 wins to 3
loses, but ended up in 4th place based on points. The Griffins took 5th
place with a record of 2 wins to 4 loses. Hopefully next year will see
better results for both Clubs. Both Clubs were in the Blue Conference this
year, which basically was an Eastern League due to the fact that all six Clubs
are located east of the Mississippi.
In the
opening Round of 32 in the USA Rugby Men's Division I Championship all 4 of the
Midwest Clubs moved on to the Round of 16 . . . congratulations to all . . . all
the results are below.
The MW
Men's Division II and Division III Championship Final 4 was held at the
Wisconsin Rugby Club's at the WRC Sports Complex, http://www.midwestrugby.org/wisconsinrugbygrounds.htm,
with Buffalo beating the Chicago Blaze in the Division II Championship match and
the Cincinnati Kelts beat the Metropolis Killer Bees in the Division III
Championship match . . . congratulations to all 4 Clubs who move on to the USA
Rugby Championship .
. . all the results from both Championship Final 4 are listed
below.
All of our Men's Clubs, DI, DII, and DIII, will be playing at Signal Hill
Park in the city of Manassas Park, Virginia, on the 21st and 22nd of
May . . . details will be on the respective pages on my site, www.midwestrugby.org, just as soon as I can get the
information up . . . keep checking back.
In the MW
Collegiate Division I ranks Davenport University and Bowling Green State
University are in the USA Rugby Collegiate Men's Division I Final 4 on
the 13th and 14th of May at Steuber Rugby Stadium on the Stanford University campus in
Stanford, California . . . details to follow on my site. Our Collegiate
Women's Clubs didn't fair as well, but both of the Clubs, the University of
Michigan and the University of Northern Iowa won their respective Pool
consolation matches on Sunday.
Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Men's Rugby Club in
winning the USA Rugby Collegiate Men's Division II Championship . . . a messy
match with the weather conditions, but the Whitewater Men prevailed over
Middlebury College 7 to 3 . . . wow. The Men of Michigan State University
won their Pool consolation match after losing their first match. In
the USA Rugby Collegiate Women's Division II Championship congratulations goes
out to the University of Notre Dame Women's Rugby Club for coming in
2nd Place, while Winona State University Women's Rugby Club won their Pool
consolation match, and the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Women's
Rugby Club lost both matches in their Pool.
In
the MW High School (MW Boys' Single School Division) and U19 (MW Boys'
Club Division) Tournaments the Penn High School Boys' Rugby Club of
Indiana won it all in the Single School Division, and will be at
Murray Field in Murray, Utah. In the MW Boys' Club Division it was the
Cathedral Rugby Club of Indiana coming out on top, and will also be in Murray,
Utah, on the 20th and 21st of May. The Boys' Consolation
and Championship matches on Saturday will be in Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy,
Utah. In the Girls' U19 Division, the only Division, Divine Savior Holy
Angles Girls' Rugby Club of Wisconsin is the Midwest Champion, again, and the
2nd Place Club is the Lakewood Girls' Rugby Club of Ohio. Both Clubs will
be at Murray Field in Murray, Utah, on the 21st of May, and in Rio Tinto
Stadium in Sandy, Utah, on the 22nd of May when they play for the USA Rugby
Girls' U19 National Championship . . . it could
happen!
On the 1st of May our MW Women's
Thunderbirds Team went to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and
played the Northeast Rugby Territory's All Star Women's Team and won the match
29 to 17. Congratulations to all the gals, and to the Management for
putting the Team together and coaching them to a great win. Next up for the Women's Thunderbirds is the Pacific
Territory's All Star Team on the 15th of May in Minneapolis, MN. To see
the current roster, and the Team's Management Staff go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/womensthunderbirds05.01.11.htm.
Congratulations to Martha Daines
who's been named the Head Coach of the Collegiate Women's All American
Team (WCAA). Martha has coached at Macalester College, University of
Minnesota, the Minnesota Valkyries, the Midwest All-Stars, the U23 National Team
and the USA Rugby Women's National Team. With her new
appointment Martha said, "The Collegiate All-American Touring Side
provides this talented group of athletes a real opportunity to test their skills
and to raise their overall level of play . . . I’m very excited to
help the athletes take the next steps along the path to full International
Play." Martha also happens to be the Assistant Coach to the
current MW Women's Thunderbirds . . . linked above.
The
Collegiate LAU All Star Tournament was held on the 16th and 17th of April at
Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Congratulations to the All Star Men's and Women's Teams from Minnesota in
winning their respective Championship, and to the Illinois Men's All Star Team
and the Iowa Women's All Star Team in winning their respective Tier II
Championship . . . both of those Teams will move to Tier I next year IF
there is a Midwest Collegiate All Star Tournament next spring. To
read more about all the details go to http://midwestrugbynews.com/rugbyupdates/.
To see the results of the Men's All Star Teams go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/11cmbrackets.htm,
and to see the results of the Women's All Star Teams go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/11cwbrackets.htm.
I would
like to thank a few people that helped out . . . first there is Mike Cline, who
handled the MW Collegiate Men's Division III Championship Tournament from the
beginning and saw it all the way through, and who also helped me with the
coordination of all the All Star Teams. I will also send out a huge THANKS
to Dave Carter, who coordinated all the Referees for both Tournaments, i.e., the
All Stars and the Division III Tournaments. A few others that need to be
thanked are Jim Sronkowski, the President of the NIU Men's Club, and Dan Matuz,
the CARFU Collegiate Coordinator . . . they were the ones that made sure all the
pre-Tournament issues got handled and done, like getting the Trainers from NIU
for free, having the pitches lined and making sure all the goal posts had
official padding. Thanks, again, to ONE and ALL, for making the two
Tournaments a success this year.
The All
Star Tournament needs some sort of budget from either the Midwest or each All
Star Team. We didn't even start with enough money to buy match balls, but
Curt at Rugby Gear came through with 4 at a very good price, and Bluey at Red
Carded Threads came through with 4 others at a pretty good price too . . .
had to make sure I had backup just in case.
One
last thing about the All Star Tournament this year . . . there weren't any All
Star Tournament T-shirts, with the Teams listed, and which I 'assumed' the
NIU guys would have made, and sold while the Tournament was going . . . they
probably would have made a bunch of money if they would have had hot coffee and
hot chocolate too. Think they missed out on making some extra money for
the Club, and that's what can happen when you have long distant Directors of a
Tournament. So, I'm taking orders on T-shirts for the All Star Tournament
. . . keep going to my site, www.midwestrugby.org, to check out the
design and for the price of each, which is in the works as I write this
message. I'll be using any profit as a starter fund for next year's
Tournament.
Speaking about our All Stars, and
keeping on that path, the MW Collegiate Men's All Star program is having their
open tryout this coming 14th and 15th of May at the Moose Rugby Grounds, http://www.midwestrugby.org/08mooserugbygroundsdirectionsmapsandlodging.htm,
in Elkhart, IN. If for other reason than to have the experience under your
belt, as a Collegiate Rugby player, GO . . . don't worry 'bout makin' the Team .
. . give it a shot . . . both the Chicago Griffins Coaching Staff and the
Chicago Lions Coaching Staff will be there helping out, plus, a few of their
Super League players will also be there to help in advancing your game as a
Collegiate player . . . they will also be there recruiting the guys also.
The Camp will start at 11:00 AM on Saturday the 14th . . . be there! Ron
Bowers, bow...@osurugby.com, is the Head
Coach, Backs Coach, and the Manager of the MW Collegiate Men's All Star
Team . . . Jared Moore, tigh...@zoomtown.com, Head Coach at
Miami University, is the Forwards Coach and General Assistant of the MW
Collegiate Men's All Star Team . . . contact either with any questions you have
or for more information.
Another MW Championship was held back
on the 16th of April, and that was the MW Collegiate Men's Division III
Championship . . . congratulations to Anderson University of Indiana in winning
it all. It's been said that USA Rugby will have a Collegiate Men's
Division III National Championship by the fall of 2012, or the spring of 2013,
and so, the MW is headed in the right direction with the DIII Championship
Tournament. To see all the results go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/11cmensd3championship.htm.
Cheers,
Shawn
