To One and All:
Jeez, I couldn't get this out yesterday due
to my DSL feed from Frontiernet.net being down in my area . . . wish they'd
make these things fool proof . . . so, here we go on Tuesday morning .
. .
Craig Coates, Texas A & M Coach
and a member of the United States Coaches Rugby Association has had to step down
from his position on the USCRA Interim Board due to increased teaching and
service commitments this semester. He's been the one keeping the rest of
us up to date on the Collegiate side of Rugby in the states . . . his
newsletters will be missed, and I hope someone takes up his work and continues
updating all of us that are members. To read his latest newsletter go to

I'm not convinced his proposals are the 'end all' of Collegiate Rugby, but
it certainly is a great start with objectives that will certainly enhance
the Collegiate game . . . if you're involved with Collegiate Rugby in any way
read his piece, print it up, and take it with you to other Collegiate people,
and even high school programs. I'm sure high school coaches would love to
see Collegiate Rugby change to the point where their respective kids don't end
up quitting the game due the lack of a solid program being at the college of
their choice, and likewise, those high school players will be able to see which
Collegiate programs have a strong base, and are the leaders in raising the
level of Rugby in the states. For some players it will give them
a path and motivate them to be better students to get into a program at the
highest level, which some are already doing, of course. I still think more
Collegiate Rugby Advisors need to be on the pro-active end of things, but that's
another story that I will present later this year, or early next year . . . I'm
sure it would help Collegiate Rugby move to a higher level administratively, and
help each program with its credibility on campus.
You're all probably aware of the fact that the
Men's Eagle Team didn't do too well against Argentina, 45 to 12,
but they beat Tonga 20 to 15 . . . Canada is next on the 15th, and the Eagles
could come out of the 2010 Americas Rugby Championship with 2 wins to 1 lose . .
. that would be oh so fine. Andrew Suniula, Chicago
Griffins, played inside center against Tonga, and got in as a sub against
Argentina . . . hmm, maybe he should have started instead of getting in at the
64 minute mark. Phillip Thiel of Life
University played for the Traverse Bay Blues a few years ago, and so, he's
one of us. Phil started at hooker against Tonga, and came in as a sub
against Argentina at prop. There's a great Q & A article about Phil in

On a sad note I got word today
from Jim Tobin, Rochester Aardvarks, that one of their guys, Bob Figueiredo,
suffered a spinal cord injury this past Saturday while playing against
Pittsburgh . . . he's already had two operations, and both went well. Jim
said that the second surgery Monday morning went well although he's having
problems controlling his right hand and the Doctors aren't sure if that
will ever get better . . . only time will tell. Jim is asking the Rugby
Community to please keep Bob in your prayers and thoughts, and Jim will keep us
updated on how he's doing as the Doctors let him know. Bob came within a
few millimeters from being completely paralyzed. If you'd like to send a

all the modern technology of surgery in general let's all pray that he makes a
full recovery . . . I watched my sister go through a lower spinal cord surgery,
and with God's help she came through it better than ever . . . two months after
the surgery she was walking normally, and playing golf again, which she wasn't
able to do before the surgery, and she was in such pain she wasn't able to walk
too far, with a limp at that, and had to use a walker before the surgery.
Let's all pray that Bob's recovery has the same success, and that he will be as
good as new in a very short time. Oh yes, Bob is a Tighthead Prop, and the
injury occurred when he was being tackled while running with the
ball.
One more time . .. the IYRA Coaches Association
will be meeting on Saturday the 30th of October to present a Positive Coaching
Alliance Workshop. This two hour workshop, which starts at 9:00
AM, is FREE for all Rugby Coaches and Parents. For more

On a very late notice there's going to be a USA
Rugby Certification Workshop on the 23rd and 24th of October in Holland,

Two Workshops will be offered . . . the 'Introducing Rugby Workshop',
which is the course for those who are dealing with Youth Rugby at the entry
level, and the 'Developing
Rugby Skills Workshop', which is more for
dealing with players that already have experience playing the game.
These Workshops are the only ones being offered in the Midwest for the next few
months, and so, if you're going to be a new Coach at the Youth or College level
get Registered and Certified now.
